Germany will meet NATO’s 2% spending target from next year, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said today, after Russia’s war in Ukraine sparked a major policy shift on defence in Berlin.
“We will ensure that the Bundeswehr finally receives the equipment it needs… also by spending 2% of our GDP on defence for the first time in decades, starting next year,” Mr Scholz told parliament.
He added that though he felt it wasn’t feasible for Ukraine to join NATO, Germany’s goal was “sustainable military support of Ukraine, including with modern Western weapons, and the strengthening of Ukraine’s economic resilience as it defends itself against the Russian aggression”.
