A 52-year-old driver, James Oluwadairo, who allegedly beat up his wife and also failing to provide for his children on Wednesday was docked before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant who resides at 28, Olarekun Street Abule Egba, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault and neglect of duty leveled against him by the police.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Raphael Donny, told the court that the offences were committed on August 18 at the residence of the defendant.
He said that the defendant beat up his wife, Bosede when she requested for feeding allowance.
“If not for one of their neighbours who intervened, the woman would have been badly injured. Oluwadairo has also stopped providing for his five children 13 years ago,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offence committed is punishable under Sections 170 and 205 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Tajudeen Elias granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case till September 28 for mention.
