The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Wednesday said that a thunderstorm hit the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, causing major destruction to part of the terminal building and power lines.
FAAN in a statement made available to Authentic Platform News Nigeria by the acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu said Pilot Lounge and General Aviation Terminal were also affected by the storm.
She explained that the affected electric power lines are the cables supplying electricity to the airport, FAAN Staff Secondary and Primary School Buildings and Private Residential Building.
She said it took immediate “remedial action which allowed flight operations in and out of the Airport. The authority is doing her best to restore normalcy at the airport which is one of the busiest in the country after the four major ones in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt.
“There was no loss of life or injury and also flight operations were not affected in the Airport. The Management regrets the inconveniences caused by this incident to airport users and the general public.”
