Three of the governors in Western States in Nigeria have stressed the need for women economic empowerment.
The governors who lend their voices to the women empowerment call were Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode alongside his Oyo and Osun counterparts, Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola spoke in Ibadan at opening ceremony of National Women Conference of Oyo State Officials’ Wives Association.
The event with the theme, “The Ultimate Woman At A Time Like This”, Ambode stated that though the current economic situation had no doubt caused serious challenge on managerial acumen of women, the society needs to give necessary support to cushion current economic realities.
He said, “Women are like magicians because they always make something out of nothing. Even when there is no increase in the money for family upkeep, women are expected to do something notwithstanding the inflationary trend that has jerked prices above and beyond the level that we could have all imagined”.
On his part, Governor Aregbesola said the future of any society depends largely on the qualities of women in such society.
Aregbesola noted men must develop capacity for development of women.
He called for eradication of female genital mutilation, describing it as barbaric and ungodly.
Also, Governor Ajimobi noted that women have always played profound roles in the home front and the nation, and as such, greater attention must be paid to empowering them socially, economically and politically.
