The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission on Friday disbursed N8 million to various hospitals and pharmaceutical shops for the treatment of indigent patients across the state.
The Chairman of the commission, Malam Lawal Maidoki, said while distributing the money in Sokoto that the gesture was aimed at ensuring a healthy society.
“This has been a continuous programme since the inception of the administration of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal.
“The government is fully committed to improving the health status of the people,’’ Maidoki said.
The chairman appealed to the partners – pharmaceutical shops and hospitals – to use the money judiciously.
He also called on the staff of the commission to remain “coordinated and committed to their duty’’ in order to enhance the welfare and health status of the people of the state.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that zakkat is strong economic institution and one of the five pillars of Islam.
It is aimed at redistributing wealth and eradicating poverty in the society.
