Moscow’s defence ministry has said that 55 of its servicemen have been returned to Russia in the largest prisoner exchange deal with Ukraine since the start of the war in February.
In its daily briefing, the ministry said the fighters – from Russia’s armed forces and its proxies in the Russian-backed separatist regions of eastern Ukraine – had been transported to Russia on a military plane and are being given health checks.
The swap, brokered by Saudi Arabia, involved almost 300 people, including five Britons among 10 foreigners.
It also included Ukrainian commanders who led a prolonged defence of the port city of Mariupol.
Ukraine said 215 of its personnel had been returned.
