Lagos State Government has said that it will start paying residents who killed rats in their neighborhood with evidence to prove it.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Samuel Adejare disclosed this on Saturday after monitoring the October edition of the monthly sanitation exercise in Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area, LCDA.

The Commissioner who was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Babatunde Hunpe, said “We are working with a company (name withheld) to eliminate rats and buy dead rats from residents.
The commissioner explained “The reason is that some of the diseases we often record are transmitted by vectors. We will not wait until there is an issue before fumigating. We believe that such strategy will help to avoid such disease.”

Adejare hinted that plans are also underway to relocate Ikoyi prison, Lagos.
This the commissioner said is necessary to address current nuisance the facility constitutes to the neighborhood.
He said the relocation of the 61years old prison with 800 inmates capacity will be carried out in partnership with the Federal Government.
Adejare lamented the poor status and location of the facility saying that the sewage required urgent upgrade.

He said, “We visited Ikoyi prison to see the challenge here. I can assure you that we will tackle it. We will see how we will work with the Federal Prison Service to ensure that we provide sewage system.

“There is a larger thing coming into play soon; that is relocation of the prison. The most valuable land in Africa is there. We should not have such in that location.”
The commissioner noted that the facility had passed its usefulness in the location.
Adejare said further,  “We are discussing with the Federal Government to deal with the relocation. In the interim, the Lagos State Government will provide the prison with better sewage system. They can also relocate the facility when the prison is relocated. His Excellency will come out with the official statement.”
