In this interview with AP News, Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh speaks about her educational background, career path, interest and her passion as a strong voice driving digital innovation and inclusion in Nigeria technology landscape for economic advancements.

AP News: Dr. Jimoh, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Your journey in the technology sector is truly inspiring. Though you have always loved to be behind the scenes, we are still able to dig you out from several commendations we have seen in the public space. Could you share with us a bit about your educational background and how it has shaped your career?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Thank you for having me, AP News. My educational journey has been quite diverse. I started my tech journey at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Nigeria, where I pursued a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering. I later went on to earn a distinction in a Master of Science in Electronic and Computer-Based System Design and, ultimately, a PhD in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Computer Science from the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom. This multidisciplinary background has equipped me with a broad knowledge base, enabling me to approach complex problems from various angles – as an engineer and a scientist.

AP News: You’ve been actively involved in education and mentorship. How do you see your role in nurturing the next generation of tech professionals?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Education and mentorship are vital to me. I believe in giving back to the community and empowering the next generation of tech professionals. As a mentor and course facilitator, I strive to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the tech industry.

AP News: Your international educational background and experience working in the United Kingdom have given you a global perspective. How do you see this perspective influencing your work in Nigeria?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: My international experience has been invaluable in shaping my approach to technology and innovation. It has allowed me to collaborate with experts from around the world and bring best practices to Nigeria. By leveraging global expertise, I believe we can drive innovation and digital inclusion in Nigeria.

AP News: You’ve been actively involved in supporting innovative startup projects. Can you tell us more about any of your recent projects?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Certainly. I have always been passionate about supporting innovative startup projects that leverage technology to address societal challenges. RescuePharm and Blue Collar Hub are two startup projects that I am currently supporting and advising on. RescuePharm uses artificial intelligence to improve access to healthcare through the availability of authentic pharmaceutical drugs in remote locations, while Blue Collar Hub leverages blockchain technology to connect skilled workers with job opportunities. Both projects have the potential to make a significant impact in Nigeria and beyond.

AP News: Your contributions to public service, particularly with the NITDA are commendable. How do you see technology driving positive change in Nigeria?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Technology has the power to transform lives and drive positive change in Nigeria. Through strategic initiatives and developmental policies like the National Blockchain Adoption Strategy and the AI Strategy for National Development and Adoption, we can harness the power of technology to solve some of our most pressing challenges and improve the lives of all Nigerians.

AP News: You’ve also been recognized for your outstanding achievements, including the recent African Tech Award for Innovation and Digital Inclusion. How do you feel about this recognition?

Dr Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: I am deeply honoured. It means a lot to me and also to anyone out there who is working behind the scenes to push boundaries and make the world a better place for everyone to leverage the digital economy to thrive.  

AP News: Dr. Jimoh, you’re not only a trailblazer in the tech industry but also deeply involved in charitable activities. Could you tell us about your role as a co-founder of Bounties Charity Initiative and your involvement in other charitable organizations?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Absolutely. Charity and community engagement are fundamental to me. As a co-founder of Bounties Charity Initiative and a board member of several other charitable organizations, I am deeply committed to making a positive impact beyond my distinguished career. I advocate for women’s empowerment and support various community development projects through these initiatives. Giving back to the community can create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

AP News: That’s truly commendable, Dr. Jimoh. Could you share some examples of the charitable activities you’ve been involved in and how they contribute to societal well-being?

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Certainly. Through Bounties Charity Initiative, we’ve been able to support numerous women empowerment programs, educational initiatives, and community development projects, from women-centric research and gap analysis to providing scholarships to underprivileged students to skill development in unemployed and vulnerable women to psychological and mental health awareness and support for women. Our goal is to positively impact the lives of those who need it most. Additionally, as a board member of other charitable organizations, I’ve had the opportunity to support various initiatives focused on education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

AP News: Your charitable activities, marked by a genuine passion for community engagement, contribute significantly to societal well-being. How do you balance your professional career with your philanthropic endeavours?

Dr Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: Balancing my professional career with my philanthropic endeavours can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. I believe that giving back to the community is an essential part of being a responsible citizen. Whether through financial contributions, volunteer work, or advocacy, I’m committed to making a positive impact in any way I can, hoping that my work inspires others to make a difference in their communities and beyond.

Dr. Falilat Olaitan Jimoh: My message to aspiring technologists and innovators is simple: believe in yourself and never stop learning. The technology field is constantly evolving, and there are endless opportunities for those willing to embrace change and think outside the box. Anything is possible with hard work, determination, and a passion for innovation.
