The former Super Eagles attacking midfielder, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has said that German’s league is more competitive and complete than the English Premier League (EPL).
Okocha who stated this at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos as part of activities in the ‘Bundesliga Legend Tour with Jay-Jay Okocha’ organised Star Times noted that his traveling to Germany spurred his career in football.
According to him, “Being the world cup champion is not a fluke, their youth development program is strong. I used to say that I got to Germany as a boy but I left as a man, I never knew they had the structures in term of discipline, education and lifestyle.”
Recalling his emergence as world cup champion, Okocha said after leaving the shores of Nigeria at age 17 to Germany for an holiday in 1990, he started with a division two club FC Saarbrucken has asserted that his starting career in Germany carved a niche for his profession as a footballer.
Okocha who was accompanied by an ex-international player Jonathan Akpoborie at Deutshe Fussball Liga (DFL), also recalled the goal he slotted in after dribbling a former germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn which fetched him accolades, adding that it was an indelible mark which was remember in germany.
He said, “Kahn doesn’t like me, he has taken it personal, I was just doing my job, I didn’t have the intention to hold the ball too long but he was at the receiving end. I am grateful of that God because people can still identify me with something in germany.”
Also speaking at the event, the Marketing Director Star Times Mr, Dare Kafar said the legend tour is part with the five years exclusive broadcast right to air Bundesliga matches in Nigeria which was signed a year ago.
Explaining the reason behind the partnership with the German league, he said the company is using this channel to allow fans and subscriber interact with Bundesliga legends
He noted that, “Another Bundesliga legend Sunday Oliseh will visit Kenya between the 22nd and 24th December where he will appear as analyst with media partner, holding training session with local managers and meeting with football fans in Nairobi.”
Also, the managing director DFL Sports Enterprise, Mr. Tobias Ross stated that the legend tour is to share the Bundesliga’s experience out of germany, adding they want the league to get closer to their international supporters.
