Federal Government has initiated efforts to establish a unified National Blood Database as a step toward improving the country’s blood banking system.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, the Director-General, National Blood Service Commission (NBSC), disclosed this during a collaborative meeting with a team from the African Medical Centre for Excellence who paid him a visit in Abuja on Thursday.
Yuguda emphasised the need for research programmes that target blood service and hematology, and pledged robust commitment to the African Medical Centre of Excellence.
He added that “the harmonisation of the national blood database is expected to improve efficiency of blood banking services in Nigeria.
“It will also ensure safer and reliable supply of blood for patients in need.
“This development is a significant step forward for Nigeria’s healthcare system, and highlights government’s commitment to quality care for citizens.”
According to him, the collaboration between NBSC and the African Medical Centre for Excellence is expected to drive progress in the fields of blood service and hematology.
Earlier, Mr Brian Deaver, who led the hospital team, said that the centre, a private specialist hospital currently under construction in Nigeria, is set to specialise in oncology, cardiovascular health and hematology.
Denver added that the hospital, which will be the first of four planned hospitals in Africa, aims to establish a Cyclotron facility, capable of providing radioisotope.
He, therefore, sought collaboration with the commission to identify areas of beneficial partnership that would improve Nigeria’s healthcare services.
