The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has granted approval to additional eight new private universities across the country.
The approval according to the Minister of State for Education, Anthony Onwuka, who briefed State house correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja after the FEC meeting followed their official recognition by Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC).
He explained that the ministry had submitted a memo which sought approval for eight private universities, following official recommendation by NUC.
Onwuka listed the eight approved universities to include Anchor University, Ayobo, owned by Deeper Life Bible Church, Lagos State; Arthur Jarvis Akpabuyo University, Calabar, Cross River state; Clifford University, Owerinta, Abia state; Coal City University, Enugu state; Crown Hill University, Kwara state; Dominican University, Kola Daisy University, both in Ibadan; Oyo State and Legacy University, Okija, Anambra State.
According to him, the new universities were given three years’ provisional license to operate, which would enable the government to appraise progress made in course of the years.
The minister also disclosed that all the new universities were to be under tutelage of existing ones, as the old ones would serve as pivot on which the new ones were based.
He further itemized method to be adopted in mentorship plan, as he listed: Anchor University would be mentored by University of Lagos, Jarvis University to be mentored by University of Calabar and Clifford University would be mentored by University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Other mentorship methods included: Coal City University would be mentored by University of Nigeria Nsukka; Crown Hill University would be monitored University of Ilorin; while Kola Daisy and Dominican universities, which were the two new universities in Oyo State, would be mentored by University of Ibadan, Legacy University, Okija, would be mentored by  Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
