Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode has said that most of social challenges currently confronting Nigeria due to dysfunctional family units in the society.
She spoke while given a speech at an opening ceremony of 16th National Women Conference, organised by Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) on Monday.
Ambode who is also the Chairman of COWLSO said social vices such as drug addiction, cultism, teenage pregnancy, kidnapping, child abuse, domestic violence, armed robbery traceable to lack of family values.
According to her, the conference theme, ‘Strong Family, Strong Nation’, was carefully chosen in recognition of fact that strength of a nation is linked to strength of its family units.
She said, “When family units are bound together in love and children are raised in the fear of God and high socio-moral values, it begets a good and peaceful society and country, where social vices are reduced to the barest minimum. To build a strong and virile country therefore, we must go back and build strong family units.”
Also, epresenting President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife Aishat Buhari said COWLSO, has emerged as one of best initiative that has placed Lagos in its unique class of excellence.
The First Lady who was represented by the wife of Imo State Governor, Nkechi Okorocha stated that the initiative is of intellectual and philanthropic association, established to complement efforts of Lagos State Government to improve people’s welfare.
She noted that the importance of strong family values must continue to be reinstated as it absence bring about challenges of poverty, crime and declining performance in schools.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, his Oyo and Osun counterparts, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and Rauf Aregbesola respectively emphasized women empowerment both in career and home front.
The empowerment they agreed determine a good society makes up a better Nation.
Highlights of the event included presentation of Inspirational Woman of the Year Award to Tara Fela-Durotoye and investiture of Senator Oluremi Tinubu as Grand Matron of COWLSO.
