Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Chief of Army staffs, Tukur Buratai, have commended Nigerian Armed Forces and President Muhammadu Buhari, for the successes recorded by Operation Lafiya Dole in the notorious Sambisa Forest.
Saraki and Buratai reaction came barely hours after Buhari announced that the Nigerian Army has flushed out Boko Haram from Sambisa forest in Borno State.
The senate president in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said that the defeat has helped the country to wrap up an eventful year.
“The news of the Nigerian Army defeating Boko Haram in their most dominant stronghold is truly gratifying. This is a gift to all Nigerians as we enter this festive season and round up this year.
“I want to congratulate President Buhari for his leadership, and his dedication to crushing the insurgency in the country. Also, I want to commend Nigerian for believing and supporting our uniform men and women.
“Of course, more work needs to be done to stamp out the remnants of Boko Haram that may be hiding amongst us, however, the downfall of the notorious “Camp Zero” in Sambisa is something that we must all celebrate at this time.
“As we celebrate this win by our men and women in uniform, we must not forget those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of our dear nation. We must all come together to celebrate their memories as we mark this win,” he said.
Buratai, who gave the commendation in a Christmas and New Year message to the troops, said that the Army’s doggedness and loyalty has helped to end the activities of Boko Haram from the Sambisa forest.
“I want to urge you all to maintain the momentum and remain steadfast as we continue to professionally and responsively carryout our constitutional roles.
“On my part, I will continue to ensure that troops’ welfare and that of their families, remain my utmost priority. Let me reassure you of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the Nigerian Army with the requisite support for us to perform our duties.
“The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Buhari, has pledged his total support to the Armed Forces to bring all ongoing operations to an end in favour of our dear country.
“This festive season heralds peace as well as a time for merriment, sober reflection and introspection. I enjoin us all to continue to pray to the Almighty God for the repose of the souls of our fallen comrades and the wellbeing of the families of our brave fallen heroes,” the army said.
